Frequently Asked Questions
Who plays Virginia hockey?
Virginia hockey is for players who are looking to continue playing at a very competitive level, while still having enough time for educational and social activities. The team consists of former junior and high school players from all across the United States.
What teams does Virginia play?
The following teams are members of the ACCHL: Duke, Elon, Georgetown, George Washington, High Point, James Madison, Navy, NC State, St. Joe's, UNC – Chapel Hill, UNC – Charlotte, Wake Forest, and Virginia Tech
UVA also faces local teams such as Liberty, West Virginia, Stevenson, and Maryland.
When are games?
All games are on the weekends and do not conflict with student classes.
What's the deal with Main Street Arena and how will this affect practice/games?
Regrettably, Main Street Arena was demolished in the summer of 2018 with plans of using the land to develop an office park. The team will now practice at LaHaye Ice Center (Liberty University) in Lynchburg, VA and play its home games at Richmond Ice Zone in Richmond, VA and SkateNation Plus in Short Pump, VA.
Are there fans?
Yes, Virginia Hockey is one of the most popular sports teams at UVA. Hundreds of fans packed Main Street Arena for home games, and crowds even reached the thousands for rivalry games. The team is exploring ideas to transport fans from UVA to home games and hopes to build a fanbase in Richmond and the surrounding area
When are tryouts?
Tryouts for the 2018-19 season will take place on the following dates: September 3rd and September 5th. Both tryouts will be held at LaHaye Ice Center. If you are interested in trying out, please visit our booth at the Fall Activities Fair just outside of Old Cabell Hall, Monday, August 27th from 11-3.
When are practices?
The team holds one practice a week at LaHaye Ice Arena on Monday nights from 10-11:30. Due to limited ice time each week, attendance at practice is expected and will directly reflect ice time in games. Part of college life is learning how to manage time wisely, so studying for exams and completing homework are not valid excuses for missing practice.
What should I do about my gear?
Unfortunately, we do not have a team locker room. During tryouts you will have to keep your gear in your dorm. If you make the team, you may be able to keep your gear at a current player's house or apartment.
What does it cost to play?
Dues are roughly $1200 per season. The team works with all players to ensure that money does not prevent anyone from playing on the team
What equipment do I need?
The team provides helmets, shells, practice jerseys, game jerseys, socks, and helmets. Players are responsible to purchase the rest of their gear.
